BIBLE

Gen. 25: 20, 24, 27- 34

20.   And Isaac was forty years old when he took Rebekah to wife,

24.  And when her days to be delivered were fulfilled, behold, there were twins in her womb.

27.  And the boys grew: and Esau was a cunning hunter, a man of the field; and Jacob was a plain man, dwelling in tents.

28.  And Isaac loved Esau, because he did eat of his venison: but Rebekah loved Jacob.

29.  And Jacob sod pottage: and Esau came from the field, and he was faint:

30.  And Esau said to Jacob, Feed me, I pray thee, with that same red pottage; for I am faint:

31.  And Jacob said, Sell me this day thy birthright.

32.  And Esau said, Behold, I am at the point to die: and what profit shall this birthright do to me?

33.  And Jacob said, Swear to me this day; and he sware unto him: and he sold his birthright unto Jacob.

34.  Then Jacob gave Esau bread and pottage of lentiles; and he did eat and drink, and rose up, and went his way: thus Esau despised his birthright.

Gen. 27:1 – 2, 4 – 5, 15 – 19, 21  – 24, 27, 30 – 35, 41 – 43

  1. And it came to pass, that when Isaac was old, and his eyes were dim, so that he could not see, he called Esau his eldest son, and said unto him, My son: and he said unto him, Behold, here am I.
  2. And he said, Behold now, I am old, I know not the day of my death: Now therefore….. make me savoury meat, such as I love, and bring it to me, that I may eat; that my soul may bless thee before I die.

4.  And make me savoury meat, such as I love, and bring it to me, that I may eat; that my soul may bless thee before I die.

5.  And Rebekah heard when Isaac spake to Esau his son.

15.  And Rebekah took goodly raiment of her eldest son Esau, which were with her in the house, and put them upon Jacob her younger son:

16.  And she put the skins of the kids of the goats upon his hands, and upon the smooth of his neck:

17.  And she gave the savoury meat and the bread, which she had prepared, into the hand of her son Jacob.

18.  And he came unto his father, and said, My father: and he said, Here am I; who art thou, my son?

19.  And Jacob said unto his father, I am Esau thy firstborn; I have done according as thou badest me: arise, I pray thee, sit and eat of my venison, that thy soul may bless me.

21.  And Isaac said unto Jacob, Come near, I pray thee, that I may feel thee, my son, whether thou be my very son Esau or not.

22.  And Jacob went near unto Isaac his father; and he felt him, and said, The voice is Jacob’s voice, but the hands are the hands of Esau.

23.  And he discerned him not, because his hands were hairy, as his brother Esau’s hands: so he blessed him.

24.  And he said, Art thou my very son Esau? And he said, I am.

And he said,

27.  And he came near, and kissed him: and he smelled the smell of his raiment, and blessed him, and said, See, the smell of my son is as the smell of a field which the Lord hath blessed:

30.  And it came to pass, as soon as Isaac had made an end of blessing Jacob, and Jacob was yet scarce gone out from the presence of Isaac his father, that Esau his brother came in from his hunting.

31.  And he also had made savoury meat, and brought it unto his father, and said unto his father, Let my father arise, and eat of his son’s venison, that thy soul may bless me.

32.  And Isaac his father said unto him, Who art thou? And he said, I am thy son, thy firstborn Esau.

33.  And Isaac trembled very exceedingly, and said, Who? where is he that hath taken venison, and brought it me, and I have eaten of all before thou camest, and have blessed him? yea, and he shall be blessed.

34.  And when Esau heard the words of his father, he cried with a great and exceeding bitter cry, and said unto his father, Bless me, even me also, O my father.

35.  And he said, Thy brother came with subtilty, and hath taken away thy blessing.

41.  And Esau hated Jacob because of the blessing wherewith his father blessed him: and Esau said in his heart, The days of mourning for my father are at hand; then will I slay my brother Jacob.

42.  And these words of Esau her elder son were told to Rebekah: and she sent and called Jacob her younger son, and said unto him, Behold, thy brother Esau, as touching thee, doth comfort himself, purposing to kill thee. 43.  Now therefore, my son, obey my voice; and arise, flee thou to Laban my brother to Haran;

Gen. 29:1, 13  – 23, 25 – 27

1.  Then Jacob went on his journey, and came into the land of the people of the east.

13.  And it came to pass, when Laban heard the tidings of Jacob his sister’s son, that he ran to meet him, and embraced him, and kissed him, and brought him to his house. And he told Laban all these things.

14.  And Laban said to him, Surely thou art my bone and my flesh. And he abode with him …

15..And Laban said unto Jacob, Because thou art my brother, shouldest thou therefore serve me for nought? tell me, what shall thy wages be?

16.  And Laban had two daughters: the name of the elder was Leah, and the name of the younger was Rachel.

17.  Leah was tender eyed; but Rachel was beautiful and well favoured.

18.  And Jacob loved Rachel; and said, I will serve thee seven years for Rachel thy younger daughter.

19.  And Laban said, It is better that I give her to thee, than that I should give her to another man: abide with me.

21.  And Jacob said unto Laban, Give me my wife, for my days are fulfilled, that I may go in unto her.

22.  And Laban gathered together all the men of the place, and made a feast.

23.  And it came to pass in the evening, that he took Leah his daughter, and brought her to him; and he went in unto her.

25.  And it came to pass, that in the morning, behold, it was Leah: and he said to Laban, What is this thou hast done unto me? did not I serve with thee for Rachel? wherefore then hast thou beguiled me?

26.  And Laban said, It must not be so done in our country, to give the younger before the firstborn.

27.  Fulfil her week, and we will give thee this also for the service which thou shalt serve with me yet seven other years.

Gen. 30:25

25.  And it came to pass, when Rachel had born Joseph, that Jacob said unto Laban, Send me away, that I may go unto mine own place, and to my country.

Gen.31: 3, 31

3.  And the Lord said unto Jacob, Return unto the land of thy fathers, and to thy kindred; and I will be with thee.

41.   Thus have I been twenty years in thy house; I served thee fourteen years for thy two daughters, and six years for thy cattle: and thou hast changed my wages ten times.

Gen. 32: 1, 3 – 7 (to :), 9, 11 – 13, 24 – 28

1.  And Jacob went on his way, and the angels of God met him.

3.  And Jacob sent messengers before him to Esau his brother.

and I have sent to tell my lord, that I may find grace in thy sight.

4.   And he commanded them, saying, Thus shall ye speak unto my lord Esau; Thy servant Jacob saith thus, I have sojourned with Laban, and stayed there until now:…

5.  And I have oxen, and asses, flocks, and menservants, and womenservants: and I have sent to tell my lord, that I may find grace in thy sight.

6.  And the messengers returned to Jacob, saying, We came to thy brother Esau, and also he cometh to meet thee, and four hundred men with him.

7.  Then Jacob was greatly afraid and distressed:

9.  And Jacob said, O God of my father Abraham, and God of my father Isaac, the Lord which saidst unto me, Return unto thy country, and to thy kindred, and I will deal well with thee:

11.  Deliver me, I pray thee, from the hand of my brother, from the hand of Esau: for I fear him, lest he will come and smite me, and the mother with the children.

12.  And thou saidst, I will surely do thee good, and make thy seed as the sand of the sea, which cannot be numbered for multitude.

13.   And he lodged there that same night; and took of that which came to his hand a present for Esau his brother;

24.   And Jacob was left alone; and there wrestled a man with him until the breaking of the day.

25.  And when he saw that he prevailed not against him, he touched the hollow of his thigh; and the hollow of Jacob’s thigh was out of joint, as he wrestled with him.

26.  And he said, Let me go, for the day breaketh. And he said, I will not let thee go, except thou bless me.

27.  And he said unto him, What is thy name? And he said, Jacob.

28.  And he said, Thy name shall be called no more Jacob, but Israel: for as a prince hast thou power with God and with men, and hast prevailed.

Gen. 33:1, 3 – 4

1.  And Jacob lifted up his eyes, and looked, and, behold, Esau came, and with him four hundred men.

3.  And he passed over before them and bowed himself to the ground seven times, until he came near to his brother.

4.  And Esau ran to meet him, and embraced him, and fell on his neck, and kissed him: and they wept.

Dan. 9:9 (to 1st ,)

To the Lord our God belong mercies and forgivenesses,

Matt. 5:7

7.  Blessed are the merciful: for they shall obtain mercy.

8.  Blessed are the pure in heart: for they shall see God.

Ps.  25: 1 -14, 16 – 21

  1. Unto thee, O Lord, do I lift up my soul.
  2. O my God, I trust in thee: let me not be ashamed, let not mine enemies triumph over me.
  3. Yea, let none that wait on thee be ashamed: let them be ashamed which transgress without cause.
  4. Shew me thy ways, O Lord; teach me thy paths.
  5. Lead me in thy truth, and teach me: for thou art the God of my salvation; on thee do I wait all the day.
  6. Remember, O Lord, thy tender mercies and thy loving kindnesses; for they have been ever of old.
  7. Remember not the sins of my youth, nor my transgressions: according to thy mercy remember thou me for thy goodness’ sake, O Lord.
  8. Good and upright is the Lord: therefore will he teach sinners in the way.
  9. The meek will he guide in judgment: and the meek will he teach his way.
  10. All the paths of the Lord are mercy and truth unto such as keep his covenant and his testimonies.
  11. For thy name’s sake, O Lord, pardon mine iniquity; for it is great.
  12. What man is he that feareth the Lord? him shall he teach in the way that he shall choose.
  13. His soul shall dwell at ease; and his seed shall inherit the earth.
  14. The secret of the Lord is with them that fear him; and he will shew them his covenant.
  15. Turn thee unto me, and have mercy upon me; for I am desolate and afflicted.
  16. The troubles of my heart are enlarged: O bring thou me out of my distresses.
  17. Look upon mine affliction and my pain; and forgive all my sins.
  18. Consider mine enemies; for they are many; and they hate me with cruel hatred.
  19. O keep my soul, and deliver me: let me not be ashamed; for I put my trust in thee.
  20. Let integrity and uprightness preserve me; for I wait on thee.

Acts 26:18 (‘open’ to ‘faith’)

18.  … open their eyes, and to turn them from darkness to light, and from the power of Satan unto God, that they may receive forgiveness of sins, and inheritance among them which are sanctified by faith…

Ps. 149:1, 3 (let them), 4, 9 (Praise )

1.  Praise ye the Lord. Sing unto the Lord a new song,

3.  …let them sing praises unto him with the timbrel and harp.

4.  For the Lord taketh pleasure in his people: he will beautify the meek with salvation.

9.  Praise ye the Lord.

S&H

309: 7 – 23

The result of Jacob’s struggle thus appeared. He had conquered material error with the understanding of Spirit Israel the new name and of spiritual power. This changed the man. He was no longer called Jacob, but Israel, — a prince of God, or a soldier of God, who had fought a good fight. He was to become the father of those, who through earnest striving followed his demonstration of the power of Spirit over the material senses; and the children of earth who followed his example were to be called the children of Israel, until the Messiah should rename them. If these children should go astray, and forget that Life is God, good, and that good is not in elements which are not spiritual, — thus losing the divine power which heals the sick and sinning, — they were to be brought back through great tribulation, to be renamed in Christian Science and led to deny material sense, or mind in matter, even as the gospel teaches.

241:-13 – 14, 19 – 21,  27  – 30

The Bible teaches transformation of the body by the renewal of Spirit.

The substance of all devotion is the reflection and demonstration of divine Love, healing sickness and destroying sin.

The baptism of Spirit, washing the body of all the impurities of flesh, signifies that the pure in heart see God and are approaching spiritual Life and its demonstration.

330: 25 – 32

The notion that both evil and good are real is a delusion of material sense, which Science annihilates. Evil is nothing, no thing, mind, nor power. As manifested by mankind it stands for a lie, nothing claiming to be something, — for lust, dishonesty, selfishness, envy, hypocrisy, slander, hate, theft, adultery, murder, dementia, insanity, inanity (in-an’ity), devil, hell, with all the etceteras that word includes.

248:29 – 32

Let unselfishness, goodness, mercy, justice, health, holiness, love — the kingdom of heaven — reign within us, and sin, disease, and death will diminish until they finally disappear.

497: 9 – 12, 24 – 27

We acknowledge God’s forgiveness of sin in the destruction of sin and the spiritual understanding that casts out evil as unreal. But the belief in sin is punished so long as the belief lasts.

And we solemnly promise to watch, and pray for that Mind to be in us which was also in Christ Jesus; to do unto others as we would have them do unto us; and to be merciful, just, and pure.

As I prepared the blue cartridge for insertion, it began to leak all over my fingers. I quickly put it in the printer, but the damage was done. Bright blue ink was all over my fingers. I grabbed a Kleenex to blot up some of it and rushed to the sink to wash off what I could. I tried soap of several varieties and even sprayed my hands with Oxyclean. Nothing worked. It faded slightly, but I still had bright blue fingers.

Since there wasn’t anything else I could do, I proceeded to very carefully replace the red cartridge, but the same thing happened, and now I had bright blue and scarlet red fingers! I was so grateful that I had some papers on the rug, because a big blob of red ink fell on the papers protecting the carpet.

It briefly passed my thought that Sunday and Church was just around the corner and I really didn’t want to show up with my multicolored hands. But then a phrase from Science & Health (page 306:25) came to me: “Undisturbed amid the jarring testimony of the material senses,…” This gave me a peaceful sense and I pretty much forgot about it.

A while later, I was sitting in my chair reading an article from the Christian Science Journal, with my hands palms down on the pages holding the magazine open when I glanced down at my hands and thought it strange that I couldn’t see any of the color showing. I turned my hands palms up where most of the color was and there was no sign of any ink! There wasn’t a trace!

Needless to say, I rejoiced and thanked God for this quick evidence of how much even a short phrase of Truth applied can reverse the claims of the physical senses.

I had injured both of my wrists and found them very painful, perhaps from over extending myself in an exercise class.  It was hard for me to open doors, jars, etc., and even dress myself.

I called a Christian Science Practitioner for prayerful help in Christian Science and was given a line from a hymn in the Christian Science Hymnal which I found very helpful.  “Take my hands, and let them move At the impulse of Thy love.”  Hymn 324

One day when I just felt the need of comfort the Practitioner drew my attention to the line of another hymn, “Like as a mother, God comforteth His children.”  Hymn 174. I also found this very helpful.

I had called a Christian Science Nurse and was given a sling to help support my wrists.

In about a month I found my wrists had regained strength with no more pain, and they are now stronger than they have ever been, and that was three years ago.

I am very grateful to Christ Jesus our Wayshower, and to Mary Baker Eddy the discoverer and founder of Christian Science who understood how Jesus healed and shared it with us in her book Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures and for the help of Christian Science Practitioners.

I would like to share my personal experience relating how I was introduced to Christian Science…

Not having been born into a Christian Science family it was later in life, after college, that I had the opportunity to learn about it through a dear friend who was a teacher at the Principia Upper School in St. Louis, Missouri. I felt drawn to it, and was so impressed by the love and peace and joy these people expressed, that I began to explore it for myself.

At that time I was a teacher and had to call in sick one day because I wasn’t feeling well. My aforementioned friend and housemate left for work and I decided to check out the stack of Christian Science Sentinel magazines she had. They are a monthly publication with articles, and testimonies from those healed by relying on the teachings of Christian Science. I became engrossed in what I was reading and after a very short time was completely free of the problem. That experience was my first healing. Throughout the ensuing years I have been blessed many times over by studying the Bible and applying the principles of spiritual healing found in the book Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures, written by the discoverer and founder of Christian Science, Mary Baker Eddy.

Fast forward to the present, I am still on this spiritual journey and endeavoring to learn more every day about God and his spiritual creation (as recorded in Genesis I in the King James version of the Bible), and to follow the teachings of Jesus.

I am incredibly grateful for Mary Baker Eddy who discovered Christian Science and revealed it to the world. Truly, I cannot imagine my life without it!!

One more thing…I have often wondered how my life experiences played out the way they did. There were some clues along the way. Even though growing up, no one in my family ever mentioned Christian Science, I had a wonderful relationship with my grandmother, who I much later found out, was a follower of another religion which adheres to many of the teachings of Christian Science.

Several years ago I made a trip back to the Midwest after my mother had passed on to help pack things up in preparing to sell her home. Much to my surprise, when cleaning out a closet, I came across a old, tattered Science and Health that belonged to my great grandfather. My conclusion is that, the seed of Truth was planted a long time ago and grew throughout the years, finding expression in my life.

One blessing my 9 year old son and I experienced, was a very quick healing of a severe case of painful flea bites on his body. We had just received 2 beautiful kittens and he was playing with them. Soon he came to me crying and saying he itched all over.  I immediately took off all his clothes and found what appeared to be an infestation of bites from fleas all over his torso, neck and face. It was a disturbing sight to me and very painful to him, to say the least. I told him I was going to call a Christian Science Practitioner and ask her to pray for him. I expected a healing as the result of her prayers. The practitioner asked me to read and think about a short paragraph, that pertained to the situation, and found in Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures, our textbook written by Mary Baker Eddy.  I read it out loud to my son, stopping to explain what it meant. He stopped crying and listened attentively, but then the pain and discomfort took over. I realized that this was not just ordinary bug bites and realized that I needed to be just as aggressive in speaking, what we call, in Christian Science, “the truth” to him and to the pain.

So I spoke very firmly and aloud to my son, affirming that “God IS supreme, all powerful and this is true right NOW. There IS no other power than that of God and His goodness. As a child of God, he is free from pain and discomfort right now. I spoke these truthful statements of healing power loudly so he could hear me through his crying.

Immediately things started calming down.   I noted that his skin was clearing up.  I finished reading and continued explaining the citations from Mrs. Eddy’s book.  I told him I was going to call the practitioner and let her know the healing was almost complete.  With that, his skin was now clear except for a few bumps and a contorted eye, he said he wanted to go back outside and play.  I knew that if I were to believe that the healing was complete, I could not be doubtful and must know that others would not see a contorted eye.  He wanted to put his clothes back on.  The thought came to me that these were the clothes which were infested with fleas just a while ago. Certainly they should be washed before he wears them again.  Then I realized that if this healing is complete, then there was nothing to fear, and nothing in the clothes could cause a problem.  I prayed to know that this healing was complete and that included the freedom of the clothes from fleas.  He put the same clothes on and ran outside to play.  When he came inside an hour later, his face was free from bumps and completely clear.   His eye was normal.  I rejoiced in this healing! During the entire situation, panic and fear did not overtake me.  I calmly stuck to the Truth in knowing that we were under God’s loving care.  I was and am very grateful!

I am so grateful for all the good God has provided for me throughout these years, for the many physical and mental healings I have had as a student of Christian Science.  Christian Science has taught me that a sense of gratitude is a powerful tool to use in prayer and for a healing!  It has been proven that a sense of gratitude, even before the healing has taken place, is powerful towards the actual healing.

My sister’s daughter, Peg, attended a Christian Science Sunday School as a child.  Peg recently told me that she “grew up thanking God for the big and little miracles I experienced each day.  I also thank my Angels, who, I was raised to believe, are God’s messengers.  Sometimes, quietly, but often out loud, I say, ‘Thank You.’  I have grown up feeling blessed, and grateful that I have this knowledge that these things are an important part of my daily life.”

It had been some time since you attended Christian Science Sunday School while I went to church, so I wasn’t sure what sort of aid you were requesting. I told you that I would give you prayer support. I then directed you to raise your thought above your feet and be grateful for the opportunity you had to perform with your friends in an uplifting musical. I then began my prayer support by recalling part of a statement from Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures by Mary Baker Eddy: “Hold thought steadfastly to the enduring, the good and the true…” I subsequently read pages in the chapter Christian Science Practice from the same book, which included, “Be firm in your understanding that the divine Mind governs, and that in Science man reflects God’s government.” I also affirmed that as God’s spiritual reflection, you could not contain any inharmonious ideas. I continued until I retired for the evening. I felt confident that God was caring for you, as he has for me always. I knew from past experience that this was the best care available. As you made no further mention of the problem and attended your rehearsal as scheduled, I was grateful that your need had been met.

Love,

Grandmom

Nearly 30 years ago, when I was living in California, a small growth appeared on my face. I didn’t take much notice of it until my hairdresser remarked, “Oh, you’re just like me—you’ll eventually get around to doing something about that.” I appreciated her cheerful and dismissive attitude, but to be honest, I was frightened.

I had no doubt that God would be my “very present help in trouble” (Psalms 46:1). I accepted wholeheartedly the Christ as Mary Baker Eddy defines it in the Glossary of Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures: “The divine manifestation of God, which comes to the flesh to destroy incarnate error” (p. 583). In my study of the Bible and Mrs. Eddy’s writings, I found daily comfort and constant instruction.

I knew that any change in the body first involves a change in thought, a shift from believing the evidence of the material senses to understanding God as all-knowing, filling all space, and having all power. I was confident that, as Science and Health states, “The effect of this Science is to stir the human mind to a change of base, on which it may yield to the harmony of the divine Mind” (p. 162). God knows every detail of our true, spiritual being, and I can honestly say I enjoyed the daily devotion to listening to divine Mind and discarding the limiting suggestions of the human mind.

At that point I knew all I had to do was grow daily in my understanding of God. I did not have to worry about other people’s thoughts. I readily accepted that the divine Mind, our very Principle, gives each individual the thoughts he or she needs.

Sometime later, I was walking along and casually put my hand to my face. The little growth fell off, leaving no trace on my face. I stood in awe of the power of our Father-Mother God. I couldn’t speak about this healing for a long time, but words from Hymn 151, “In speechless prayer and reverence” (Ellen J. Glover, Christian Science Hymnal), certainly came to mind. That feeling stayed with me and led to the best part of all in this demonstration of Truth’s power to make us free. When I went to the grocery store, I would often see a woman whose face was severely disfigured, and I’d had the urge to look away. But the first time I saw her after my healing, I was filled with an overwhelming sense of our both being the flawless expression of infinite, radiant, divine Love.

Over and over again, Mrs. Eddy describes love as being central to Christian Science healing, and for this I am profoundly grateful.

When I was a teenager, I began suffering from seasonal allergies at the end of each summer. Often when my family and friends were enjoying activities outdoors, I was either trying to keep up and feeling miserable, or cooped up indoors, not feeling much better.

Once when I was with my family at a lake with some good friends, I spent the day inside sneezing and blowing my nose. One of my friends, out of genuine concern, asked why I didn’t take some medicine to control the problem.

I had been raised in Christian Science, and my family had always relied on God for healing. I myself had witnessed and experienced countless instances of spiritual healing by turning to God. But after I’d been praying halfheartedly about the allergies without any results, the idea that something as simple as taking a pill might bring me relief from this suffering was an attractive one.

I love nature and have always found spiritual inspiration from hikes in the woods or quiet moments by a pond. I could very clearly see that flowers, trees, and other plants are reminders of God’s beauty and grace, which naturally “should uplift the thought,” not pull me into a state of misery.

Praying with these ideas, I found that the fear of seasonal allergies was soon gone. I was completely free from any symptoms of allergies. This healing occurred nearly 20 years ago, and I’ve never again suffered from allergies.

I am so grateful for this clear proof of God’s love for His creation, in which all His ideas coexist harmoniously with one another.
